Il aida le pape à combattre ses ennemis en Italie (1074) puis commanda une expédition contre les musulmans en Espagne (1087) qui s'acheva par un grave échec devant Tudela. Devenu l'un des chefs de la 1ère croisade après avoir fait le voeu de quitter à jamais l'Occident. Il participa aux batailles de Nicée, de Dorylée, d'Antioche et de Jérusalem. il refusa deux fois la couronne de Jérusalem et fonde le comté de Tripoli. Il mourut à la bataille du Mont-Pélerin, pendant le siège de Tripoli qu'il n'avait toutefois pas pu enlever. |
